If you have installed a central heating / cooling system in your office space, it is safe to say that it will work perfectly for years. However as your system ages, it begins to lose its ability to heat and cool your space due to general wear and tear, clogged filters, or duct work issues. This can be very frustrating for your tenants or employees as over time heating and cooling can become inconsistent from one room to another. This frustration and lack of usable space can lead to productivity drops, employee and tenant turnover, and bad first impressions. All these problems that stem from uneven air temperature or quality make it very important that you know how to fix these issues, and when to call in professionals to help. Luckily, in this blog we will be going over 4 ways to fix uneven air in your office, so that you can quickly solve the problem and get back to business as usual if you ever come across this challenge.
First check around the office for air vents that are blocked by furniture, debris or anything else that is restricting the flow of air through the vent. Be especially thorough in the areas of your office that are having air temperature issues as this is most likely where the issue resides. If you do find that one or more vents are blocked, this could be the cause of the issue and should be taken care of. Either move the blockage or vacuum out any debris that could be restricting the flow of air into your office space and give the air some time to recover to see if that fixes the issue. You can also redirect air to certain areas of your office by partially closing vents (do not close them fully) in some rooms and leaving them open in others. This will push extra air into those areas of the office that are having issues and hopefully clear up the problem. Make sure not to close the vents fully as this could cause a pressure build up in your HVAC system, leading to further damage.
If you have uneven air temperature, try turning your HVAC system thermostat from “Auto” to “On” to try and clear it up. When your system is set to “Auto” it only regulates air temperature when there is a call for it to do so by the system. If your system has a malfunction with this call, it could be causing your system to turn off prematurely, causing uneven air temperatures. When your system is set to “On” it continually circulates air throughout your office, which can help to even out any temperature imbalances. Doing this may increase your energy usage and result in a bit of a higher energy bill, however it will pay for itself by potentially finding the issue and making your office a more comfortable working environment. If this does solve the issue, contact an HVAC technician to come take a look at your system, and get the auto feature up and running properly again.
If a leak is present in your air duct system, the air meant for a specific area of your office may be getting released before it can reach its destination. This can cause temperature imbalances in your office since the hot or cold air being sent to a specific location is not getting there and thus cannot heat / cool that area. A leak in your duct system also causes the rest of your system to work harder to try and make up for the loss of air, which can hurt the life span of your system and make the temperature imbalance in your office even worse. If you are experiencing temperature imbalances in your office, consider bringing in a professional to take a look at your air vents and make sure there are no leaks present. If there are any leaks, this is most likely the cause of your issue and fixing the leak(s) should clear up the problem.
If you are having temperature consistency issues and your HVAC system is more than 10-12 years old, it may be time to replace the system. As HVAC systems age, they begin to lose efficiency and functionality, parts begin to fail, and they can begin to cause more problems than they are worth. This loss of efficiency and functionality could be why you are experiencing temperature control issues in your office, due to the HVAC system simply not being powerful or efficient enough to handle the amount of space you have. If you have an older system and you begin experiencing this problem, consider calling in an HVAC professional so that they can assess your system and determine if it is time for it to be replaced, and or is simply in need of repairs.
